Viber introduced end-to-end encryption for all messages and calls on its platform today. Viber declared the encryption following WhatsApp’s move to add end-to-end encryption to its platform.
New feature is available for Android, iOS, PCs and Mac desktops. It includes the encryption feature with latest app update 6.0. You have to re-authentication the app (via QR Code) to enable this feature.
The latest update of Viber includes
- Increased security – The padlock icon confirms that all your messages. Groups and cross platform messages are end-to-end encrypted.
- Hidden Chats – You can hide specific chats, so nobody knows they even exist.
- Contact authentication – a new layer of security allows you to protect yourself further with a simple “trust contact” mechanic.
Viber users have to use latest version of Viber to use this feature. You will be notified when your conversations are encrypted. The encryption update will be available in next two weeks for everyone.
“We have been working on this for a long time. We are proud that our users can confidently use Viber without fear of their messages being intercepted. Whether it is in a one-to-one or group message, on a call, on desktop, mobile or tablet” Michael Shmilov, Viber’s COO, said in a blog post.
Viber introduces Hidden Chats
Viber has also launched a new feature called “hidden chats” to protect privacy. Many users share their tablet with their families. They have private chat like a surprise for loved ones. For this reason, Hidden chats allow to hide particular chats, so only user know about it.
Viber has a database of more than 700 million users. Viber was founded by four Israeli partners. On February 13, 2014, Rakuten announced they had acquired Viber for $900 million.
