John Mueller, Google Webmaster Trends Analysts, has confirmed that AMP is not a ranking signal, yet.
In his recent hangout he confirmed the news. He said
Is AMP a ranking signal? At the moment, it is not a ranking signal.
It is obviously one way to make mobile friendly pages, so that might be an option where you do that. I’ve already seen some web sites where they’ve moved the whole web site to the AMP format. Obviously that is mobile friendly setup so it kind of picks up the mobile friendly thing. But just AMP itself is not something that we have a ranking signal at the moment.

But he did not mention that AMP will not be a signal for search engine ranking. So you still have to check if your site respects AMP.
For now, AMP is in top news search box. But Google has plan to expand it, which means, it will be a ranking signal in upcoming months.
In case you are not aware, Google has introduced AMP pages on this Wednesday for mobile. Though it only appears for only those searches that show the carousel in your mobile search.
